The electric bass guitar is popular in rock, country, blues and jazz. It has become the "bottom end" of most of the music we hear everyday. Bassists are often the songwriters and considered the "music heads" in a musical group. This is because knowledge of musical scales as well as rhythm skill are necessary to excel on the bass in a group environment. These foundations make for good songwriters with endless personal fountains of creativity.

Because it only has 4 strings instead of the 6 on a standard guitar, the popular belief is that it is easier to play than a guitar. This is not true. Bass Guitarists in a group must be rock solid musicians to hold down the beat of the song. They also must be learned musicians to be able to take a song up or down or "open it up" with their selection of bass lines. I teach my bassists that there is more to life than the "root" and to use the full triad of a controlling chord AND to extend it when it makes sense. If you want to play the bass, I promise to show you what that means!

At Loudoun Music, bass guitar students learn how to use those 4 strings to be the "rudder" in a musical group. They will have a firm grip of rhythm, melody, bass line construction and soloing/coloring with their instrument. My bass students rock hard and understand the impact of their instrument. They know how to hold the music together and how to step out and be noticed when the time is right.
