As adults, we really need to learn or die (as one of my adult students once told me). I agree with this. We adults tend to think we can’t learn as quickly or easily as children. One reason for this fallacy is because children must allot more than half their day to learning, whereas most adults probably allocate less than 10 hours a year to genuine self improvement. Learning a new instrument gives an individual the chance to chose a new direction and accomplish a goal.
With very few exceptions my adult students are the parents of kids I have taught who want to share the experience with their kids. A musical family experience is one of the greatest experiences there can be at family parties and around the holidays.
Since it’s relatively simple to get started making solid music on the guitar; it is a popular instrument for adults getting into music for the first time.
Progress comes quickly with a little dedication and practice. Once a certain level of competence is achieved the students can get together and play with friends, giving them a fun social activity.
